Activities performed during May - June 2010

We didn't get much time but we all gather atleast thrice a week in last period to carry out various group activities. To begin with one of the member from the club gave a morning talk infront of school assembly informing the students about importance of biodiversity and why Rhodondendrons for biodiversity conservation? Each group drew beautiful diagrams of different species of Rhododendron found in Sikkim.

Activity kit on biodiversity and weather supplied by Vigyan Prasar were distirbuted among groups.

We have recently (on 22nd May 2010) visited Palden Thendup Namgyal Park, Chorten, Deorali for our nature walk for about three hours. Each group actively participated in counting the number of trees, herbs and shrubs and tried to classify them. We have collected some wild mushrooms for spore planting, leaves for leaf print and leaf outline. Insects were also collected and observed them (morphological structure) using hand lens and mounted lens. After observing they were released back to nature again. Students were very curious and excited to observe tadpoles in a small water pool. Each group had taken bark print too.
On the way to our destination we had met one gentlemen who was well versed with local names of the trees. He helped us to identify different kinds of trees in that area. Back to school Mr. Binod PGT (Bio) helped us to find out the scientific names of those trees.
Each group came up with innovative idea in making leaf zoo using dry leaves, twigs and seeds. Group 226 students have taken beautiful photographs of some wild floweres and medicinal plants.

After all these activities we had our packed lunch sitting under the trees enjoying the beauty of nature. It was one of the most beautiful moment of our lofe. Students were literelly refusing to move away from that place but with constrain of time we had to leave thinking of revisiting the place.

Back to the school on Monday (last period) representative of each group shared their experiences. Since our half yearly exam is i the corner, students are more focused on their studies due to wihch we all have wind up our activities for timebeing. We'll come up with more activities and keep updating with more information about our club in forthcommig days.
